Koh Tao is a year-round diving destination. With very little current the dive sites are appropriate for all levels of divers.
April to September are the best months to dive with visibility reaching over 30m. When the visibility is less there is still plenty to see with the lower visibility bringing bigger schools of Bigeye Trevally and Barracudas.
You’ll see everything from schools of fish, small Nudibranch’s, Nemo Clown Fish, Sting Rays and maybe even a Whale Shark!

Often described as the best dive site in the gulf of Thailand, this huge granite pinnacle rises all the way to the surface. Start your dive by dropping down the chimney, a vertical passage that opens up to a world teeming with life. Schools of barracuda swirl round the ‘secret pinnacle’. Explore every nook and cranny to findn tiny shrimp and crabs hiding in the vibrant coral.

Launched in 1944, the HTMS Sattakut was a US Navy ship that served in World War II before being decommissioned and gifted to Thailand. It was purposely sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef and one of Koh Tao’s favourite dive sites. This wreck gets more and more full of life as time goes on. Don’t forget to look up and see some upside down fish as you swim through the captain’s cabin.
You can dive this wreck as part of your Advanced Open Water course in Koh Tao or as a fundive.

What you can see:
– Schools of small fish in and out of the coral garden
– Banded Sea Snake, Blue Spotted Rays, Turtles, Boxfish, Pipefish, Crab, Shrimp, Pufferfish and more
2 granite pinnacles and boulders with a vibrant coral garden and schools of small fish chilling over and amongst the coral. This is the largest dive site on Koh Tao with a high diversity of local marine life, so no matter how many times you do this dive site you will see a different world. This is one of my favourite Koh Tao dive sites and is the best night dive in Koh Tao.
Depth: 5m – 25m
Level: Open water to experienced
What you can see:
– Blue Spotted Rays, Jenkins Stingrays, so many Shrimp and Crabs, Nudibranch, Titan Triggerfish and more
– Whaleshark (if you’re lucky)
A dive site offering a labrynth of swim throughs (too many to count) provided by large boulders ontop of eachother. This dive site is excellent for finding tiny critters like shrimp, crabs and Nudibranch. Watch out for the trigger pit just off the dive site as you don’t want to annoy the territorial Titan Triggerfish.
Depth: 0m to 28m
Level: Open water to experienced
What you can see:
– Blue Spotted Rays, Jenkins Stingrays, Pufferfish, Nudibranchs and more
– Whalesharks (if you see one on this dive site you’ll likely be the only boat there so you get to enjoy the whaleshark alone)
Unfortunately Shark Island is not named after it’s carnivorous visitors but after the shape of the island – it kind of resembles a shark fin. That being said whalesharks and reef sharks do occasionally visit this dive site. This site is more challenging than the other Koh Tao dive sites as there is almost always quite a strong current. The current brings in an abundance of marine life and the site is filled with beautiful hard and soft coral and boulders.
Depth: 5m to 18m
Level: Beginners to experienced
What you can see:
Blue Spotted Rays, Jenkins Stingrays, Shrimp, Crabs, Nudibranch, Pipefish, Pufferfish, Turtles and more.
Granite pinnacles with colourful coral gardens surrounded by an abundance of fish, moray eels, stingrays and the occasional turtle.
Depth: 13m to 24m & 16m to 28m respectively

In 2023 two new ships were purposely sunk. Both guided missile battleships served Thailand since 1977. Not only does this add two wrecks for divers to explore, they will also act as artificial reefs where new coral will grow and new marine life will make their home.
Depth: 2m to 20m
Level: Open water to experienced
What you can see:
Blue Spotted Rays, Jenkins Stingrays, Shrimp, Crabs, Nudibranch, Pipefish, Pufferfish and more.
A small pinnacle will be the starting point for this varied dive. Bring your torch because you’ll want to peak into the crack the runs all the way round and down this pinnacle. You’ll spot plenty of pipefish, Nudibranchs, shrimp and likely a jenkins stingray or two. Once you’re done exploring in the crack you’ll swim across to Nangyuan cave which is a large swimthrough where you can spot more tiny critters and huge pufferfish chilling out. You’ll spend the rest of the time exploring the stunning coral and topography near Japanese Gardens.
